Off The Square` is just that - located within metres of the city cathedral. The former theatre had been abandoned for years before it was renovated and opened in 2003. A fresh development with restored historical facade that was first worked on by the well known New Zealand motorbike designer John Britten, who by his initial approach to this building ensured that there would be no room that is square. The 38 rooms at the New Zealand accommodation all offer a unique and different interpretation for clients to explore. The soft new age modernism of the Hotel Off The Square is typical of the style of hotels known as HIP or Highly Individually Placed. A development within the boutique hotel category, this hotel is a high branded, multi star service establishment. In the high-design age, Off The Square provides a stylish alternative to hotels reflecting sameness. Another aspect of Off The Square is its quirky and unusual approach to the decor and hotel experience. The city tramway runs through the hotel, an artist in house works on a fresco type painting on the grand wall in the foyer, a stunning Paul Jackson painting on the first level opens the Hotel’s artscape and is sure to evoke response. There is New Zealand pop icon art, Kiwi experience photography, NakedArt body forms from local fitness instructors and some surprises for those who venture to the hotel. Off The Square will provide a big name in design and fashion in the city and follows the distinctive style of HIP hotels. In Herbert Ypma's series of HIP hotel books these individualised hotels are described as part of the "high design revolution, high art, cool kitsch, Zen minimalist, chic loft living and lavish historical revivalism".  accommodation
The window decor is developed on McQuarrie wool drapings in a black chic styling. Designed in Christchurch and created with a Danish inspired approach. The wall colours are respectful of the local environment from Central Otago to Canterbury to native plants like the Pohutakawa. Furniture is covered in the new textile fabric ‘Slick and Sleek’ and along with all textile/fabric choices are specified well above the usual hotel offering. The hotel is highly tekkie! Broadband ethernet connections are available in every room, so any needs in a fast new computer age are met. In addition there are even long beds made up for tall guys!
